As I mentioned a few times I expected this past weekend to be one of the bigger hurdles I would have to get past on my journey to a successful Whole30. As it turns out I was right but not for the reasons I had expected at all. I had a friend coming into town Saturday night through Tuesday and I was concerned about navigating the food issue while eating out with a guest and not seeming like a nutjob about the food stuff. I had planned ahead, bought a bunch of food that I could cook quickly and snack on so we wouldn’t have to eat out for most of our meals and had a new restaurant in mind for us to try for dinner one night that sounded pretty Paleo-Friendly.
Unfortunately things did not go as planned. Saturday night I very suddenly wound up in ridiculous amounts of pain while trying to watch a movie. I tried to play it off, not wanting to ruin the weekend and figured it must’ve been something I ate that day that didn’t agree with me. I tried to sleep but wound up tossing and turning and very restless all night due to the pain in my lower abdomen that was radiating up my sides and creating incredibly sharp shooting pains in my shoulder blades whenever I tried to lay down any way other than a very awkward position on my left side. I eventually took some painkillers around 7 Sunday morning and managed to get a couple hours of sleep but awoke still in a bunch of pain but determined to forge on ahead with my weekend.
We walked downtown to the ChiliFest, which I had been so excited to be able to go to due to it being rescheduled from the day before when I had to work and did a quick lap before returning home again sans chili due to my increasing discomfort at being mobile. I was also annoyed that most of the chili vendors didn’t list their ingredients and I had no interest in waiting in line for half an hour just to find out that the chili had beans in it or something else that I’m trying to avoid.
Once back at my place I made us an awesome breakfast sausage, spinach and egg omelet which we devoured happily. I had by this time explained to my guest somewhat the reason why I was eating the way I was using some of the tips from the Whole30 site on how to talk about it and my guest was pretty understanding. He made a comment about how I was limiting myself from a lot of things and I then needed to backtrack and explain all the stuff that I could eat and in the end he didn’t think I was a total nutjob or anything. We then watched some hockey (Flyers won!) and I managed to find a position on the couch that was semi-comfortable and napped for a little bit since I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before.
As Sunday evening came upon us I really tried to rally. I got myself ready to go out as we both wanted to try the new restaurant that I mentioned earlier. Getting dressed took a lot out of me however and my pain was increasing again so when my friend suggested we just order in for the night and go out the next night I finally gave in and said okay and changed back into my PJs. The next couple hours got progressively worse. I was suddenly incredibly dizzy and started to feel very faint. I tried to stand up a couple times but found that I didn’t have the strength to do that and felt like I was going to pass out each time I tried. Our food arrived and I tried to eat a little bit but felt incredibly nauseas and was having crazy hot and cold flashes. Basically I was a complete mess by this point and in more pain than I’d ever thought possible. My guest had asked me a few times earlier in the day if I wanted him to take me to a doctor and I had declined but at this point when he again asked I said yes let’s go.
